The quickest way to renew your licence is through the trade login.

The Board introduced a requirement in 2023 for all registered people to provide information about their fitness to practice when renewing their licences.

This will ensure that the Board can continue protecting the health and safety of the public, and retain confidence in the profession by assuring the public that licensed plumbers, gasfitters, and drainlayers are fit and proper persons to carry out their work.

If you are enrolled to complete the New Zealand Certificate at Level 4, you must hold an active limited certificate authorisation to do any restricted work while completing your apprenticeship. The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board issue these authorisations to trainee plumbers, gasfitters and drainlayers each year.

The Board licence card is virtual and available on the PGDB App (available to download for free on Apple or Android). Alternatively you can order a physical licence card for the price of $4.50 incl GST in the Trade Login.

Licence card design

The Board has received queries about the back of the card where the authorisations are listed. The Board's logo design is used to correspond to the trade. We are often queried in particular about the drainlaying trade, as this appears as a circle. This is intentional and does no relate to specific licences.

Registered tradespeople are responsible for maintaining correct details.

The public register is a legal requirement under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006.

• The public register is for the public to check if a person is registered and if they hold a current licence to carry out work.
• On your public register page is your name, current licence(s), registration history, licensing history, information about any disciplinary action, and information about any cancellation or suspension of a person's registration or practising licence.
• If you're a Certifier, the people you are supervising will also be listed on your page (Exemptions Under Supervision, Trainee Limited Certificates, Restricted, Plumbers/Gasfitters/Drainlayers, and Provisional licence holders).
• Under section 76 of the Act, it is your duty to notify the Board within 3 months if you have a change of address, email or phone number. Update these details by logging into your online account.
• If you have had a change of name you need to notify the Board within 1 month. Complete the application below and return this to the Board.

How can I renew my licence online? 

You can renew your licence online by logging into your trade log-in or downloading the Board's app on your Apple or Android device.

I don’t know my licence number?

To find out what your licence number is, please contact the licensing team on 0800 743 262.

Please note: For privacy reasons, we cannot release your licence number to third parties.

I don’t know my password, how can I reset it?

To reset your password, you will need to enter your 5-digit licence number and email address and select ‘forgot my password’.

What do I need to do each year?

You need to ensure the following requirements have been met each year.

• Contact details have been checked and updated
• CPD has been completed
• An appropriate supervisor has been nominated
• Your supervisor has accepted the nomination.

What is the disciplinary and prosecution levy and why do I need to pay this?

The Board is a regulatory body charged with ensuring that plumbers, gasfitters, and drainlayers practice safely and competently, with the primary goal of protecting public safety. This is required by law under the Act 2006.

Each year the Board collects a Disciplinary and prosecution levy from each registered person when they renew their practising licence. The levy covers two areas:

• Discipline (by the Board in a hearing) of registered practitioners who have done substandard work (i.e. Restricted, Plumber/Gasfitter/Drainlayer, Certifying), and
• Prosecution in court of non-registered people who do illegal, unauthorised work

The disciplinary levy goes directly towards costs arising out of prosecutions for registered and unregistered tradespeople and the prior investigation as set out in Section 143.

The fees paid by practitioners fully fund the execution of the Board’s regulatory functions. The Board receives no government funding and manages its operations on a full cost recovery basis.
