Skills Recognition

Already experienced? Get your skills and knowledge recognised.
If you already have experience in plumbing, gasfitting, or drainlaying, you may be able to get a head start on earning a nationally recognised industry qualification.

Skills Recognition is an assessment process that allows you to prove you already have the skills, knowledge, and prior learning to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Certificate.

The assessment can result in you gaining the full qualification just by demonstrating what you already know.

Otherwise, you may be able to gain individual unit standards, helping you achieve the full qualification in a shorter time.

Skills Recognition is a great option if you have experience in the industry, and you want formal recognition to demonstrate this.

For example:

- people who have an overseas qualification and need the equivalent NZ qualification; or

- people who have been working in the industry for a reasonable amount of time, and have a history of employment and holding a licence (minimum 7 years).

To be eligible for Skills Recognition, you must meet the following requirements;

- currently be employed in the industry, and
- hold a current Exemption Under Supervision license.

What is the Skills Recognition process?

You start by putting together a portfolio of evidence. This is made up of documents that show your skills, knowledge, work experience, and formal study.

An assessor will use this to determine your competency level.

Examples of the types of evidence that will support the assessment include;

- your CV, outlining your work history, written testimonials, names and contact details of referees

- attestations – this is written feedback documented and signed by present and past employers, supervisors, managers, teachers, or community members

- workplace documents – job sheets, job cards, timesheets, logbooks, performance appraisals, job descriptions, licenses held, manuals developed, organisational records, site training records, Qualifications (NZ and overseas), NZQA Record of Learning, trade certificates

- recent professional development e.g. H&S courses, industry courses, specialist product training, projects, photographs of work completed etc.

Your portfolio of evidence is submitted to a registered Skills assessor. The assessment process may include a conversation, and in some instances, a practical observation.

At the end of the assessment process, your assessor will produce a summary report.
