Certifying gasfitters must now file the details of all gas certificates online, print and provide a signed copy for the consumer.

Why gas certificates
are important

Gas certificates are a legal document. Under the Gas Regulations, a gasfitter must provide a signed copy of the certificate to the consumer and the Board. There are strict time frames around when these certificates must be filed by the gasfitter. Within ten working days of the work being commissioned a certificate must be filed. An additional allowance of five days is given for the certificate to reach all the relevant parties. The certifying gasfitter is required to keep a copy of the certificate for seven years.

There may be different terminology used by different organisations that you deal with, with a gas certificate being recognised as an Energy Works Certificate under the Building Act 2004 and a Gasfitting Certification Certificate under the Gas Regulations. For the consumer's purposes, they mean the same thing.

The certifying gasfitter must provide a signed copy of the certificate to the consumer. The certifying gasfitter may not be the person who actually carried out the work at your property. However, the certifying gasfitter must be satisfied that the work carried out is in accordance with all legislation and compliance documents and a gas certificate is his verification of this. In the event you have a concern about the gasfitting work carried out at your property, the certifying gasfitter should be your first point of contact.

Certificates should be kept in a safe place as they may be required for conveyancing purposes if the property is sold. Gas providers may also require a copy of your certificate before you are supplied with gas or before they refill your LPG bottles.

Since October 2010, gas certificates have been filed by certified gasfitters electronically on the Board's online database. Over 500,000 paper certificates held by the Board have been recorded electronically in the database. Where an installation was certified using a paper certificate, that certificate serves as the true, legal document. The electronic record of a paper certificate serves as a record that the paper version exists. It is important to note that if there are any inconsistencies between the paper certificate and the electronic record of it, then the paper version prevails.

How to get a copy of a gas certificate

You can search the Board's online
database for a gas certificate.

Or alternatively, you may be able to obtain a copy of a gas certificate from:

  • the gasfitter who certified the gasfitting installation(s), as they are required to retain copies for up to seven years
  • the previous owner of the property if the work was done prior to your purchasing the property
  • your local council - they may have a copy on file

Alternatively, contact another certifying gasfitter to check the installation for current compliance and safety of the state of work of the work at the present time. Please note that there may be an additional cost for this.

If you are unable to locate an electronic record of a gas certificate online please complete this form if you wish the Board to search and provide you with a copy.
