Why gas certificates
are important

Gas certificates are a legal document. Under the Gas Regulations, a gasfitter must provide a signed copy of the certificate to the consumer and the Board. There are strict time frames around when these certificates must be issued by the gasfitter. Within ten working days of the work being commissioned a certificate must be issued. An additional allowance of five days is given for the certificate to reach all the relevant parties. The certifying gasfitter is also required to keep a copy of the certificate for seven years.

There may be different terminology used by different organisations that you deal with, with a gas certificate being recognised as an Energy Works Certificate under the Building Act 2004 and a Gasfitting Certification Certificate under the Gas Regulations. For the consumer's purposes, they mean the same thing.

The certifying gasfitter must provide the certificate to the consumer. The certifying gasfitter may not be the person who actually carried out the work at your property. However, the certifying gasfitter must be satisfied that the work carried out is in accordance with all legislation and compliance documents and a gas certificate is his verification of this. In the event you have a concern about the gasfitting work carried out at your property, the certifying gasfitter should be your first point of contact.

Certificates should be kept in a safe place as they are required for conveyancing purposes if the property is sold. Gas providers may also require a copy of your certificate before you are supplied with gas or before they refill your LPG bottles.

How to get a copy of a gas certificate

You can search the Board's online
database for a gas certificate.

Or alternatively, you may be able to obtain a copy of a gas certificate from:

  • the gasfitter who certified the gasfitting installation(s), as they are required to retain copies for up to seven years
  • the previous owner of the property if the work was done prior to your purchasing the property
  • your gas supplier
  • your local council - they may have a copy on file

Alternatively, contact another certifying gasfitter to see if he will come in and re-certify the work or give a report on the state of the work at the present time. Please note that there may be an additional cost for this.
